چکیده

In this work we report results on the efficiency of error recovery strategies over heterogeneous networks with both wired and wireless components. We investigate the relative impact of end-to-end delays and error patterns on protocol performance for three broad categories of protocol behavior: aggressive, conservative and adaptive. We monitor the network behavior using varying error conditions and we set end-to-end delays ranging from 10 to 200ms in order to capture delay characteristics of wired, wireless and satellite networks. We show that: (i) End-to-end delay has varying impact on protocol performance. This impact depends on the recovery strategy, the error rate and the error type. (ii) Standard TCP Reno and Tahoe mechanisms that implement their respective recovery strategies display conflicting patterns of behavior, that might not conform to network conditions nor to their strategic goals. (iii) Adaptive behavior yields better results when a protocol flexibly alternates conservative and aggressive strategies based on the error pattern detected and the end-to-end delay. We support this conclusion with the results of TCP-Probing.

Improving TCP performance over networks with wireless components using "probing devices"

TCP error control mechanism lacks the ability to detect with precision the nature of potential errors during communication. It is only capable of detecting the results of the errors, namely, that segments are dropped. As a result, the protocol lacks the ability to implement an appropriate error recovery strategy cognizant of current network conditions and responsive to the distinctive error cha...

Adaptive Spectral Separation Two Layer Coding with Error Concealment for Cell Loss Resilience

This paper addresses the issue of cell loss and its consequent effect on video quality in a packet video system, and examines possible compensative measures. In the system's enconder, adaptive spectral separation is used to develop a two-layer coding scheme comprising a high priority layer to carry essential video data and a low priority layer with data to enhance the video image. A two-step er...

Optimizing the Torque of Knee Movements of a Rehabilitation Robot

The aim of this study is to employ the novel Adaptive Network-based Fuzzy Inference System to optimize the torque applied on the knee link of a rehabilitation robot. Given the special conditions of stroke or spinal cord injury patients, devices with minimum error are required for performing the rehabilitation exercises. After examining the anthropometric data tables of human body, parameters su...

Efficient Sparse Recovery via Adaptive Non-Convex Regularizers with Oracle Property

The main shortcoming of sparse recovery with a convex regularizer is that it is a biased estimator and therefore will result in a suboptimal performance in many cases. Recent studies have shown, both theoretically and empirically, that non-convex regularizer is able to overcome the biased estimation problem. Although multiple algorithms have been developed for sparse recovery with non-convex re...
